I definitely prefer Comes a Time. For some reason High Time never resonated with me the way it does with most listeners.

This is very interesting, because Comes a Time does absolutely nothing for me. Nothing at all. It's one song I just have no interest in or feeling for. High Time is beautiful ... I can't understand the comparison.

You got that right...I cannot even understand the discussion about the pairing, save vague musical similarities?

To me, HTime is such a poignant, singular one on one love song, love gone bad, but finding its way, and Catime is so much more of the meaning of life, opportunity, blah, blah, blah.

Am I missing something? Don't mean to rag on those that like it, and those that prefer latter HTimes, but even Jerry admitted it was too hard to sing HT "right", and by all accts, the studio is the ONLY one, on his recommendation (ie, by defn since then he could work on it til he got just the sound he wanted, presumably).

How about for a moment not weighing the ‘performance’ of these two songs and just take a look at the lyrical and musical artistry that radiates from their composition. I think the heart of the matter (are these good songs?) is purely resolved by the grand emotional propensity that they convey. I can readily identify with either – and that is a testament perhaps to my own personal struggles with loss, regret, hope, redemption – whatever each of us might find Hunter to be expressing in his lyric (and Jerry with his delivery.)

So, yes, I believe you are missing something! For me, Comes A Time really hits home and is one of those remarkable and beautiful songs that make the Hunter/Garcia canon so dear to my heart.

edit - I just realized that your “am I missing something’ comment was directed at HT, so I offer an apology if one is necessary. I knew High Time from an early age, via Workingman’s of course, and that rendition will always satisfy.:) But it is apparent that we all get something a bit different from the recorded performances.

No, you had it right, D; and yes, your notion of the lyrical qualities is spot on...my pt was the two songs are very different, in my view. HT, the one I love, is a one on one love song, CaT, a "meaning of life" (partial love) song, if that makes sense. I never thought of them as similar other than cadence, etc. So, my "missing something?" was I love HT, but CaT doesn't do much for me, and wouldn't have paired them in some discussion, myself. And both are hard to sing, but the studio HT is great.

Hope that clears it up.

In ICU I had a vision of Garcia with his purple paisley sweater - like, an epiphony of the 6th dimension... he lives... the party goes ondon't fret... there's a party goin' on...
well, then I woke up. And my R.N. offered me Phil Lesh's book, but I wouldn't take it... she was beautiful and so much younger than I. I wanted her to have it.

God knows there is a grateful dead....

Basically agree; and the studio version is so canonical, to me, that I don't really even have an interest in comparing live versions! It's a small masterpiece.

Funny because i have been listening to Workingman's a lot recently and those were my thoughts as well. Why bother listening to any other version of this song? I can't think of a live one a like better. However my vote still goes to Comes A Time.

Well, that does it! No backing on BEW + JS then!

(I never thought Jerry could pull off the vocals on CaTime...does it on HT in studio, just, but not close enough on the other to my biased ears. IMnotsoHO.)

I love Comes a Time; it seems timeless to me, whereas what I like in High Time is somehow more time-related ... it seems to have a kind of 70s sensibility. I like them both, but Comes a Time is just so transcendent.

Yes, I think you really hit the nail on the head! There is just something really stirring about the simplistic elegance (lyrically speaking) of this song. Not to mention the fantastic, jazzy jams that could emerge from it...
